Benefits of Exfoliating Your Scalp
Exfoliation is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Just like the skin on your face, your scalp contains sebaceous glands that produce oil (sebum). Even if you don’t suffer from dandruff, the health of your hair can be greatly impacted if it’s not getting a thorough exfoliation every week.
Exfoliating the scalp regularly can keep it healthier in the long run, preventing issues from cropping up and improving the look of hair. To experience the freshest, healthiest scalp—and the impressive hair benefits that come with it—continue reading to learn how to properly exfoliate your scalp in just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Lightly Exfoliate with a Scalp Brush

Prepare your scalp by lightly exfoliating before jumping in the shower or bath for a more throughout scrub. To begin, take a teasing brush and lightly (this is key, as too much pressure can cause more issues than it solves) buff away at the scalp. This motion will loosen up any dead skin cells and prepare for the actual scrub. We recommend using this brush or a similar scalp brush because it’s specifically made for scalp exfoliation in preparation for optimal cleansing.
Step 2: Use a Clarifying Shampoo

If scalp scrubs intimidate you, a great place to start is with a clarifying shampoo that can be used once per week. We personally love this one from Oribe thanks to its foamy texture and cruelty-free formula. What makes it so effective? Volcanic ash powers this detoxifying mousse, which polishes away dirt, oil, and product buildup. Hair is restored and refreshed immediately.
Step 3: Exfoliate with a Scalp Scrub
If you prefer to try an exfoliating scalp scrub over a clarifying shampoo, be our guest! After all, you know your hair and scalp better than we do. However, we recommend choosing one or the other. Doing both at the same time could strip your hair and make your ends feel dry. There are a lot of scalp scrubs on the market and this one from Ouai happens to be one of our favorites because it can be used for both body and hair. Section wet hair to reveal scalp and massage in circular motions to gently exfoliate, then rinse. Your scalp will thank you.
Be sure to thoroughly rinse out any remnants of whatever scrub your choose to use to ensure there is no product leftover. If your shower has low water pressure, it’s easiest to flip your head over and rinse so the water can be easily distributed to properly rinse out the product. To maximize results, we recommend exfoliating your scalp once a week.
